Monastery of Walsrode

The monasteries around Lüneburg are medieval nunneries, which have kept the life partnership of a convent and an independent form of Christian tradition due to the conversion into a protestant religious foundation for women. This way buildings and treasures where kept, which can be seen during guided tours.

Coming out of the traffic and the noise of the town through the wrought-iron gate of the monastery, one will be surprised about the silence behind the doors. Open green, knotty old trees and affectionately kept flower beds, an old well and memorial stones give a picturesque scene.

18thCentury half-timbered houses are spread over the place and give the eldest of the Lüneburg monasteries a modest look

During the tour you will see how history has changed the monastery.

At the end of the with arms decorated hallway called "Langer Gang" you will find baroque doors that lead you into the chapel called "Chor".

The blue wooden ceiling is of rococo architecture. The painted windows are of late medieval style and dominate the room.

If you take a closer look, you will see the wooden carved representation of the Holy Communion, a statue of the infant Jesus ("Bambino") in a with pearls embroidered robe, a gothic altarpiece and many more.

High above in a recess is the nearly life size wooden statue of Count Walo, the eldest remaining work of art which even survived the big fire in 1482.

The hall in gothic style with paintings of the abbesses marks the end of the guided tour. Here you will be able to acquire souvenirs and postcard etc.

A walk through the garden with the look at the baroque grave stones and the old grave yard will bring a contemplative end to the tour.

Patron saint of the monastery as well as the adjoining church is John the Baptist. A picture of him you will find on the left hand side window of the chapel.

On 24th June the remembrance of John the Baptist is celebrated with an "open singing" and an evening service. Both events are open to the public. Guided tours are not available on this day.
